Our Mission
Our mission at Canaan Baptist Church is to be a Christ centered church committed to the spiritual growth of ourselves, our families and our communities; teaching and admonishing all to receive the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, to lift and nurture the soul of man through the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Our History
From its early establishment, a small committee from the Third Baptist Church was formed consisting of Minister R.L. Austin, Minister Melvin Mitchell and Deacon J. E. Chandler by the guidance of the Holy Spirit. A meeting was held decently and in order according to God’s purpose. Minister T. M. Shorts was moderator and W. L. Scott held the position of secretary. Thirteen churches were called to the assembly and the council recommended that a new church be recognized with all rights and privileges of all other Baptist Churches. Thus, First Baptist Church Lincoln Park was born; the original church was located across the railroad tracks from its current location at 1100 West Queen Street, Hampton, VA.
The Lord has called many inspiring and charismatic pastors to the First Baptist Church, including Pastor Austin, Pastor Threats, Pastor Massenburg, Pastor Hill, Pastor Thomas, Pastor Merritt, and Bishop Samuel L. Cutler. Bishop Cutler served Canaan Baptist Church formerly known as First Baptist Church, Lincoln Park for 41 years. Praying to God in selecting a new pastor to carry on the work at Canaan Baptist Church; Bishop Cutler recommended and selected Pastor Copeland to succeed him as Pastor of Canaan Baptist Church. Pastor Copeland started his pastorate on October 7th, 2019 and he was installed as the 13th Senior Pastor on January 12th, 2020. The motto for our ministry at Canaan is: “A Church committed to God and the Community”. We look forward to the awesome things that God has in store for the future of Canaan Baptist Church.
